Supreme Court weighs Medical Marijuana Laws
Attorneys for the Bush administration and two California women sparred Monday before the Supreme Court over
the use of marijuana as a legitimate medical treatment.
Justices are considering whether sick people in 11 states with medical marijuana laws can get around a federal
ban on pot.
Paul Clement, the Bush administration's top court lawyer, noted that California allows people with chronic
physical and mental health problems to smoke marijuana and said that potentially many people are subjecting themselves to
health dangers.
"Smoked marijuana really doesn't have any future in medicine," he said.

Friday night witnesses told police that victim Michael Beckwith, 15, was with friends when he was approached
by five or six youth shouting gang slogans. The young men swarmed the boy and he was shot 4 or 5 times.

- Shane Kielion Jr. Funeral services were held at Cecilia Church because it seated 1000. However, people still had to stand

A Surveillance Tape Busts a Firefighter and Dispatcher Partying on the Job
A videotape that allegedly shows a Massachusetts firefighter and a 911 dispatcher snorting cocaine and drinking
beer on duty has been released. The surveillance tape was recorded on an overnight shift Nov. 17.
Excerpts of the tape released by the mayor Monday allegedly show the two fire department employees engaged in drinking
beer, snorting cocaine and dancing. One was identified as a civilian dispatcher named Judy Brito. The other was identified
as fulltime firefighter Isidro "Junior" Cordero. Both were fired after a disciplinary hearing on Friday.
Lawrence's Mayor Michael J. Sullivan said the behavior was intolerable.

Moscow tests new missile system
MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- Russia on Monday successfully tested a modernized anti-ballistic missile system, the
military said, in what an analyst called a sign that the country was trying to answer the United States' withdrawal from the
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
The test-firing of the missile, which can intercept and destroy other missiles, was aimed at certifying it
for further use, said a Space Troops spokesman who declined to give his name.
He said the missile's technical performance was flawless during the launch that took place at 11 a.m.
Colombian official: Rebels planned to kill Bush
U.S. President George W. Bush was targeted for assassination by Marxist rebels this week when he visited the
city of Cartagena, a Colombian official said Saturday.
"We found out through informers and various sources that groups within the [Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia] had been instructed from its leadership to make an assassination attempt on President Bush," Colombian Defense Secretary
Jorge Alberto Uribe told Caracol TV, a Bogota-based satellite network.
Uribe said no evidence of the alleged plot by the group -- Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia or
FARC -- has been recovered.
